I’m enormously excited to part of an exhibit at Rutgers University, entitled, “A Parallel Presence: The National Association of Women Artists, 1889-2009.” When some people find out that the artist behind my sculptures is female, many are surprised. Most don’t associate using a power sander with being a women, and it’s true, the field of sculpture – especially sculpture that uses heavier materials – is populated by a larger number of men. So that is part of the reason I am so excited to be part of this exhibit. What makes this exhibit particularly fascinating is that it is not only contemporary artists, but contains art from NAWA’s entire history – showing both how art by women has evolved, as well as how that art has been regarded. Other artists I am proud to be in the exhibition with are: Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, Theresa Bernstein, Bessie Potter Vonnoh, Blanche Lazzell, Dorothy Dehner, Louise Nevelson, June Wayne, Pat Adams, Faith Ringgold, Idelle Weber, and Martha Walker. It is heady and esteemed company and I couldn’t be prouder to be part of this great organization and great tradition.
The show opening is on May 13th from 6-8PM, please RSVP to me directly via email if you would like to attend the opening.
The exhibit runs through the following dates:
