Lions Park To Add Stone Sculptures

The Lions Park in East Bremerton, Washington is currently being renovated in order to include stone sculptures as part of the park’s design. Not only are these contemporary sculptures being made for the visual beauty that they will provide, but they are also going to be used for kids to play on them.

Will Robinson, a stone sculptor, is busy crafting the representational sculptures of whales at Elandan Gardens. By the time he is done with his modern sculptures he is going to have them installed in Lions Park.  The way things are progressing right now, the sculptures should be in the park by the end of the month.

While Lions Park has been officially closed during the renovation period, there have been locals who have been using the park’s facilities for the last few weeks anyways. The park is set to reopen officially on September 9th with the sculptures of realism and everything else in tact.

The inspiration behind the whale sculptures came from the killer whales that inhabited the region back in 1997. The whales were specifically L-Pod orcas, and they were able to be seen from Lions Park for about 30 days.

Being that the sculptures are based on something historic about the park, they are going to hold more meaning than if they would have just been some abstract sculptures. It will forever be a link to that point in time when the whales made their temporary stay, and the future people who go to the park will always have that knowledge.

The price for that knowledge? Try over $1.8 million.

In order for the park’s renovation to take place it received funding from the Lions Club ($50,000), the city ($300,000), and the state ($1.5 million). Hopefully, with all of that money being put into the new park, this site won’t be in need of another renovation any time soon.

Robin Antar’s Abstract Sculpture: 2 Figures

Robin Antar, the artist who is widely known for her stone sculptures of realism, has been working on creating a couple of abstract sculptures. One of those sculptures that she is working on is known as 2 Figures. This contemporary sculpture is made from 600 pounds of brown alabaster and its sculpting process was started in the state of Colorado.

When Ms. Antar sculpts her modern sculptures, she is very precise and accurate so that she can achieve exactly what she set out to from the start. So whether it is a representational sculpture of a bag of M&M’s or an abstract piece, the artist needs her full concentration to get the sculpture just right. Because art is one of the greatest forms of inner expression, every line and every ridge matters because each one helps tell a more complete story.

In addition to the actual sculpting, the choice of medium also helps depict a more accurate expression of what the artist is trying to convey to the audience. So in the case of Ms. Antar’s latest sculpture, her use of brown alabaster was a conscious choice, which helped her express herself in the most exact way.

2 Sculptors Being Featured at Caldbeck Gallery

CaldbeckGallery.com

If you have the chance to make it to Maine between now and August 12, the Caldbeck Gallery is featuring 5 great artists who will be showcasing their amazing work. Two of the artists in particular, Lisa Becu and Bill Martin, are going to be displaying their sculptures.

Lise Becu is known for her representational sculptures of humans and animals, as she likes to display the relationship that exists between one another and the universe. One of the stone sculptures that she is exhibiting is of a lion, which is sprawled on the ground. Because the material of the lion sculpture inspired Becu so much, she made two abstract sculptures out of granite. Having the abstract sculptures in addition to the sculptures of realism, truly shows the wide range that Becu possesses as a sculptor. Although she focuses on the representational sculptures, her abstract sculptures don’t lack much, if anything, in comparison.

Bill Martin is showcasing his contemporary sculptures titled “Tribe.” These modern sculptures are depicting lively members of a tribe who range in height from 8 inches to 25.5 inches. The detail that is shown on the faces of the tribe members was created by a variety of lines, and the figures as a whole have the feel of Northwest Indian culture. The way he went about his sculptures shows that he has been influenced by a variety of things in nature, and the culmination of all of those things comes together beautifully in his completed sculptures. When you look at these sculptures you can actually see and feel the expression that the tribal members have on their faces.

To check out these great sculptors, as well as the other fantastic artists in this gallery, you can go to the Caldbeck Gallery, which is located at 12 Elm Street in Rockland, Maine.

Robin Antar Featured In New York Daily News

Robin Antar, the Brooklyn artist who is famous for her stone sculptures of realism, was recently featured in the New York Daily News. With her humongous representational sculpture of a bag of potato chips in the final stages of work, the media saw it fit to talk about her and her body of work to the masses.

Prior to her potato chips sculpture, Ms. Antar has sculpted other delicious contemporary sculptures that represent American culture. These sculptures include M&M’s, a York Peppermint Pattie, Milano Cookies, Oreo’s, and a Heinz Ketchup bottle. In addition to these modern sculptures of realism, Ms. Antar has also sculpted abstract sculptures that are pleasing to the eyes and that serve as great centerpieces to any room.

Whatever the sculpture is, you can always be assured that Ms. Antar is going to give her all to it so that her vision can come to life for everyone to enjoy. Each and every detail that goes into her stone sculptures requires tremendous concentration and precision to get it just right. Once her sculpture of the bag of potato chips (which has taken over 10 years to sculpt) is complete, you are going to be able to see the hard work that was put into it.

Not a day goes by where Ms. Antar isn’t improving on her craft, and the plethora of sculptures that she has to show is a testament to the kind of artist and person that she is. If you ever get the chance to see her work in person, don’t pass up on the opportunity because it will truly blow you away.

Robin Antar’s Potato Chips Nearing Completion

It’s been over 10 years since Robin Antar began her project of sculpting a larger-than-life representational sculpture of a bag of potato chips. Each day the stone sculpture extraordinaire from Brooklyn wakes up and heads into her garage to continue perfecting her 6,000 pound masterpiece. And if you were wondering how she moves her enormous contemporary sculpture, she uses a crane.

With the modern sculpture nearly complete, Ms. Antar is looking for a potato chip company that would like to purchase the rights to it. The company that gets it will have a sculpture of realism (yet much larger) with their company’s logo on it to showcase to the masses. Which ever company does end up with it is going to be very lucky as they will be getting an iconic piece of artwork from a true professional.

Over the years Ms. Antar has sculpted unbelievable abstract sculptures and representational sculptures. After September 11, though, she started to focus a little bit more on the product replicas (such as the potato chips, M&M’s, and York Peppermint Pattie) in order to capture America. While a lot of other sculptors were busy sculpting American flags and the Twin Towers, Ms. Antar decided to sculpt junk food. Why junk food? Well according to Ms. Antar, “What is America? It’s junk food.”

Being a long-time American, I can’t say that I disagree with that statement. I guess that explains some of the success of her artwork. Her hard work and dedication explains the rest, of course. 10 years on one sculpture? Now that is what I call “dedicated.”

2 Sculptures of Mayan Warriors Found in Mexico

A few days ago in Mexico, there were 2 stone sculptures that were found that may tell stories of wars past. The 1,300 year-old representational sculptures are supposedly from captured Mayan warriors from the time there was war among the Mayan cities.

The two sculptures are of two warriors sitting with their legs crossed and their hands tied behind their backs. Found on these stone sculptures are hieroglyphic inscriptions that suggest that these warriors belonged to the city of Copan. By uncovering these inscriptions, archaeologist Juan Yadeun thinks that warriors from Copan helped those in Palenque during the city’s’ 26-year war against Tonina. In addition, these sculptures had other distinct characteristics that led the archaeologist to understand more details about the time of war back then.

Having sculptures made is a great way to preserve the history of a culture, and the more details that are included, the better picture you can get of the time period. Whether it is a sculpture of realism or an abstract sculpture, the inclusion of important nuances can help future people understand much more.  Even though you would think that the sculptures are only relevant when they are contemporary sculptures or modern sculptures, this is not true. Because there are people like archaeologists who study history, and they are able to combine their knowledge of history with the artifacts that they find, they get a more complete picture than the average historian gets.

Who knows? Maybe your next stone sculpture can say something critical about this time period for future generations. The only way that will be possible is if you keep sculpting. So get out there and sculpt!

Stone Sculpture Found In India

Daijiworld.com

Last week in India there was a stone sculpture of a unicorn that was discovered. This representational sculpture, which is thought to be from the 12th or 13th century, is claimed to be one of the rarest of the unicorn icons found in India.

Although this is not an abstract sculpture, some people might have a hard time classifying it because it is a combination of a horse, elephant, and bull. The right front leg clearly resembles an elephant’s leg. The hind leg has a hoof at the tip like that of a bull. And the face looks just like the face of a horse.

Being that this is not a contemporary sculpture, it might be hard for people to understand what this creation is all about. Fortunately, Professor Murugeshi of MSRS College Shirva, is somebody who has the knowledge of what this sculpture is all about. According to Murugeshi, this is what the demigods from Tulu folklores rode on in the past.

Even though this is not a modern sculpture, and it is based on folklore, not realism, this sculpture is still something that can be appreciated in today’s day and age. Because this sculpture tells a story and it is aesthetically pleasing to look at, it serves a purpose and is an important piece of the history of India. And as time moves forward, its value will only increase.
